Grigor is checking out Roger’s racquet. Ohhh
Stan and Roger talk about their doubles partnerships at the BNP Paribas Open.
Roger Federer has cast doubt on his friendship with Rafael Nadal and called for the top players to
The Swiss is not known as the most outspoken on the men’s circuit but, as he battles to prove his doubters wrong, the 32-year-old has hinted that his relationship with Nadal is not what it seems.
Federer said: "I’m not sure how close we are as friends. I’ll be interested how much we’ll stay in touch once everything is said and done and we’re off the circuit. We’re not going to dinner, if you know what I mean."
"We’re almost too nice to each other sometimes," Federer told TennisEarth.com. "I don’t want to say today’s players are too soft, but it’s good when players go after each other a bit."
Okay, first of all: how is either of those quotes casting doubt on his friendship with Rafa? I’m a fedal fan myself, but Roger is not friends with Rafa the way he is with Stan, and Rafa is not friends with Roger the way he is with Marc, the Armada, or Andy! So chill!
Second, THOSE ARE NOT EVEN ACTUAL QUOTES!!! Those are misquotes from this article, taken COMPLETELY out of context!
Wanna know what he ACTUALLY says? Here’s the first bit:
GQ: We remember it well. You’ve always seemed to have a special connection to Australia and you’re a fan of our tennis players too, right?
RF: Yes, especially Lleyton – I love his fighting spirit. We were practising yesterday for four hours and I was telling him I feel like… I don’t want to say today’s players are too soft, but we’re almost too nice to each other sometimes. It’s good when players go after each other a bit.
He’s not talking about Rafa! Rafa hadn’t even been mentioned at all at this point!
Here’s the second bit:
GQ: True that. But is it possible to be mates with your competitors? Are you even allowed to fraternise with the enemy?
RF: I’m not sure how close we are as friends. I’ll be interested to see how much we stay in touch once everything’s said and done and we’re off the circuit. But while we’re still playing, you don’t quite know – even though I consider myself close to all the guys because we know each other. We like each other and we like each other’s rivalries. And because we know we’re going to see each other every week, we don’t have to stay in touch. We say, ‘Hey it’s nice to see you again, what’s been going on?’ But we’re not goingto dinner, if you know what I mean.
Even if this one might have sounded a bit like a go at how close he is to his rivalries, which Rafa is a big part of, sure, two questions later, when they ACTUALLY discuss Rafa, this is what Roger says:
GQ: There’s a video on YouTube of you and Rafa giggling, while trying to shoot a promo together. That seems like a genuine bond.
RF: I’ve done and lived the most with him. From five-set matches on court, to promoting a tournament in Qatar, to doing foundation work together in the ‘Match for Africa’. And I’ve gone to dinners with him.
I know his family the best, as well. I know his mum, dad and sister. Yeah, our bond goes further back than the one I have with Novak or Andy. And for that reason I feel closest and most connected to Rafa.
This negates EVERYTHING the ESPN article was implying.
Basically, ESPN took an article in which Roger mentioned how CLOSE he feels to Rafa and took quotes out of context to make it sound like the exact opposite.
Well, there you go, the ruse is as plain as day now. *mic drop*
Roger Federer threads a passing shot past Lukas Rosol after chasing down a delicately placed lob. Two sweet reaction volleys prior to that too.
Roger swiftly puts away Czech Republic’s, L. Rosol, 6-2, 6-2. Hoping for a lot of matches with that score by Roger this year! Bravo, Roger! We’re into the semis in Dubai.-Photos via Facebook
